San Juan Diego
Saint Juan Diego
Juan Diego experienced a vision. An Aztec who converted to Catholicism, he encountered the Blessed Virgin Mary. Her skin was brown and she spoke with him in his native language, assuring him that she was indeed the mother of Christ. He was directed to speak with the Archbishop of Mexico City and request a shrine be built in her honor. The Archbishop did not believe him and asked for a sign.
Juan Diego had more visions of the Holy Mother before she revealed her sign, roses blooming amongst the cacti. He gathered the roses carrying them in a mantel around his neck. When he appeared before the Archbishop, he dropped the mantel to reveal the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
Our Lady of Guadalupe is the Virgin Mother of the Americas and the Patron Saint of México and Puerto Vallarta.
