“Nature Boy” was Nat King Cole’s first bonafide hit. Recorded in 1947, written by eden ahbez (yes, all lowercase). He was a hippy before there were hippies. He approached Nat King Cole’s manager at a concert and was rebuffed. He then went to Cole’s valet who promised to get the sheet music to Cole. Nat King Cole was so taken with the song that he immediately recorded it. But, eden ahbez was nowhere to be found. Eventually, they discovered him camping under the Hollywood sign. Finally eden ahbez signed on the dotted line and they were able to release the recording.
Nature Boy
He came in a dream. I awoke and Nat King Cole was singing “Nature Boy.” Such a beautiful, mysterious song. I saw this image and immediately went to work.
I love the last line of the song:
“The greatest thing
You’ll ever learn
Is just to love
And be loved
In return”
