Frida is in flight, ascending from earth into the heavens on a stream of monarch butterflies. Her favorite creatures close. A beloved spider monkey by her side. Her magic carpet guided by parrots. She leaves the Blue House behind. No more ties. No more pain. Flying high and free. She is filled with a quiet joy. She at peace.
Serene.
La ascensión de Frida Kahlo
The Ascension of Frida Kahlo
Frida Kahlo – a great artist. A complex icon. Often defined as a victim. During her life, and after, others have projected their feelings on her: “She is unfaithful;” “A damaged soul;” “Wild.” At age 18, she was injured in a bus accident that sent a handrail through her back and out of her pelvis. For the rest of her life, she lived with severe pain.
Frida was not a victim. Frida was fierce. She spoke her personal truth. She had a deep passion for living her art and filling the world with love, joy, and sometimes anger.
In México, Frida’s image is omnipresent – on plastic shopping bags, masks, t-shirts, and bobblehead dolls. I wanted to rescue Frida from these “definitions,” these judgments. I wanted her to have some peace. Her work is filled with magic realism. I was inspired to send her flying into a place of serenity and love.
