My husband and I are Mexico and Day of the Dead aficionados. Our wedding was filled with papel picados, paper flowers, pinatas, and marigolds. These two grooms sat on top of our wedding cake, coconut with lemon crème. Yum. We brought the groom cake toppers home from Puerto Vallarta after my partner of almost 30 years popped the question. (We are now in our 40th year.) Our fabulous wedding photographer Corinna See took the photo that inspired this, the original “Amor.”
I get much of my inspiration for my Dia de los Muertos images from photographs that I snap. Puerto Vallarta’s Malacon (beach boardwalk) is filled with enormous Day of the Dead figures and altars in the days leading up to November 2. I visit several times that week during different times of day with my point-and-shoot camera. I then bring them to life, imagining them living, breathing, and moving.
